Hello! I’m Helen Wan. I’m an author, lawyer, and frequent speaker on diversity & inclusion, careers, and workplace happiness. My debut novel, THE PARTNER TRACK, was published by Macmillan in September 2013. The paperback edition will be published on September 9, 2014.
THE PARTNER TRACK is the story of a young Asian American woman competing for partnership at a prestigious, high-stakes law firm. It’s about how diversity, difference, and ‘outsider’ status impact the lives of talented young people ascending the corporate ladder. It’s also about ambition itself, and how to stay true to ourselves while pursuing career success.
Since the book’s release, I’ve had the privilege of being invited to speak at a great many companies, law firms, law schools, universities, leadership conferences, bar associations, and other places around the country about the themes of my novel: how we — especially women and people of color — experience the dynamics of corporate America and the career ladder, and what we can do to achieve a more inclusive and engaging workplace.
I find group dynamics and social hierarchies endlessly fascinating. I’m very interested in our complicated relationship with ambition, and how gender, race, socioeconomic class, and cultural and family upbringing affect our pursuit of happiness. I love a good workplace story, and I root for underdogs.
I’m now at work on a second book. When I’m not writing, I love reading, exploring new neighborhoods, and making our toddler son giggle. Thanks for visiting my website. I’m happy to meet you! – Helen
