Hello! I’m Helen Wan. My debut novel THE PARTNER TRACK was published by Macmillan in September 2013 and has just been released in paperback in September 2014.
I’m an author, lawyer, and frequent speaker on women in the workplace and diversity and inclusion. I’ve written for CNN, The Washington Post, The Daily Beast, The Huffington Post, and others.
THE PARTNER TRACK is the story of a young Asian American woman competing for partnership at a prestigious “old-boy” law firm. It’s about how race, sex, class, and “outsider” status impact the lives of talented people climbing the corporate ladder. It’s also about ambition itself, and how to stay true to ourselves while pursuing career success.
I’ve had the privilege of being invited to speak at a great many companies, law firms, law schools, universities, leadership conferences, bar associations, and other places around the country about my novel, about how we — especially women and people of color — experience the dynamics of the career ladder, and what we can do to achieve a more inclusive and engaging workplace.
I find group dynamics and social hierarchies endlessly fascinating. I’m very interested in our complicated relationship with ambition, and how societal factors and cultural upbringing influence our pursuit of happiness. I love a good workplace story. I root for underdogs.
I’m now at work on my second novel. When I’m not writing, I love reading, traveling, and making our toddler son laugh. Thanks for visiting my website. Happy to meet you! – Helen
